While we won't know what caused the Colgan crash for a number of months, we should take a look at the effects of Tailplane Icing on Regional Aircraft. 

Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those involved in the Colgan accident.  While none of us can bring these victims back, we can learn from what they left us and maybe help prevent a future accident.

As Regional Airline pilots we are more like to run into tailplane icing because of the altitudes we fly at as well as the equipment we fly.  It is an extremely dangerous condition.

Here is a NASA video that explains the effects of Tailplane Icing and what we as pilots can do to recover from Tailplane Icing.  You'll probably be surprised.  This video may save your life one day.  It's worth spending a few minutes with it.
